My heart is moved by a noble theme as I recite my verses to the king—Psalm 45:1

I recently finished writing some hymn lyrics for my church based on themes from Psalm 45, a love song celebrating the unique greatness of God’s King. The lyrics are below. They’re set to the tune of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy (think “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee”).

Matchless King of matchless value,
Unseen God in flesh we see.
Messengers from heaven praised you,
God as babe—what mystery!
Lord of life in anguish dying;
Our atonement justly made.
Lord of all in glory rising;
Highest cost for grace is paid!

Matchless King of matchless power,
Death-blows from the serpent failed.
Evil crushed at death’s dark hour,
Woman’s promised seed prevailed!
You wield justice as your scepter;
Strength and joy anoint your robes.
Your reign will endure forever,
Making footstools of your foes!

Matchless King of matchless beauty,
Fairest of the sons of men,
May your majesty and glory
Turn our hearts from self and sin.
We, your bride, present our love song;
From your lips flow words of grace.
Loved one, bring us to our true home
Where we’ll see you face-to-face!

Matchless King of matchless blessings
Freely given to your bride:
Power to keep homeward pressing,
Hope of beauty glorified,
Robes made from your righteous splendor,
Right to reign with you on earth,
You, our greatest joy and treasure,
Matchless King of matchless worth!
